PUBLIC LIBRARY

Lamia Public Library was founded in 1954.

In the beginning it operated as a core library of the Municipal Library and the following year became the Public Library, with the head of Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. Since then, it operates according to the order of the law 1362/1949 “on the Establishment, Reconstruction and Uniform Organization of State Libraries”. In 1979 it became the Central Library and acquired a Mobile Library Service which served 120 lending centres in Fthiotida.

In 1996, the Library was relocated, after years of effort, to the 1st floor of the Traditional Legacy on Ainianon Street. Today it has about 55,000 volumes of books and its collections cover the complete spectrum of knowledge and is regularly enriched with new publications to meet the reader’s needs. Our library is equipped with electronic equipment and is fully automated. The cataloguing system uses the ABETK 5.00 programme and is registered in electronic form. The library’s classification uses the decimal system devised by Melvil Dewey, which is used internationally.
